【追根溯源】

student最早源自十四世纪晚期的古法语单词estudiant，意思是“student, scholar, one who is studying”，即“正在学习的学生或学者”。

student也与中世纪时期的拉丁语单词studiare有渊源，studiare的意思是study。

student其实是由词根stud-（学习）与后缀-ent（...人）构成的，所以其字面意思就是“在学习的人”。

【惯常用法】

student常用的含义是“学生”，如：

Every student in the class is capable of passing the exam.

班上每个同学都有能力通过这次考试。

student有时也可以表示“学者”，如：

He is a student of international politics.

他是研究国际政治的学者。

英语中常用来表示“学生”的单词有：student, pupil, disciple, follower, learner。这些单词的主要区别在于：

• pupil特指中小学生，尤其是小学生。
• student普通用词，可指中学生，但主要指高等学校或专科学校的学生。
• disciple主要表示“弟子；门徒；信徒”。
• follower主要表示“追随者；狂热爱好者”。
• learner通俗用词，指某一门学问上的初学者，尤指成年的初学者。

【教材实例】

当我们要表达某个专业的学生时，只要在student前面加上该专业的名称即可。如《新概念英语2》第26课的课文里，出现了这么一句：

I am an art student and I paint a lot of pictures.

我是学艺术的学生，画了很多画。

此外，如果要表达什么阶段学校的学生，也是直接在student前面加该阶段学校的名称即可。如《新概念英语2》第84课的课文里，出现了这么一句：

Meanwhile, a number of university students have volunteered to drive buses while the strike lasts.

与此同时，很多大学生自愿在罢工期间驾驶公共汽车。
